King penguins, Macquarie Island – Australia, 2017

These birds stand about 1m high.  When you stand not he beach where they live, they crowd around to see what you are before returning to their own business.  We were not permitted to move within 5m of them, but they were allowed to come closer to us if they wished – and they did!

    1. Thanks. These penguins are amazing. Macquarie Island is not an easy place to get to and the weather is generally pretty bad, but it’s well worth the trip! From Wikipedia: “Macquarie Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies in the southwest Pacific Ocean, about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica, at 54° 30′ S, 158° 57′ E”
