Furthest south 77°45′ – Antarctica, 2017

On our trip to Antarctica I had wanted to see the huts from Shackleton’s Nimrod expedition of 1907-1909 at Cape Royds, Scott’s Terra Nova expedition of 1910-1913 at Cape Evans, Scott’s Discovery expedition of 1901-1904 at Hut Point and Scott Base.  We managed the first two, but were unable to get through the ice to Hut Point and Scott Base.  We managed to get within about 20km! Unfortunately, the channel created earlier in the year by the US icebreaker Polar Star had refrozen sufficiently that we were unable to go any further south.  We did get off the ship and celebrate with a walk and a cup of champagne – it was so cold (around -15°C) that it started to freeze in the cups

Furthest South - 77°45'
Scott Base is just past the brown pointy hill (Observation hill)!

Looking back at the channel from our furthest south position (note the Orca swimming around back there)

Celebration on the ~2m thick sea ice at our furthest south position – there’s that brown pointy hill again!
